SA: Ban on Murray River fishing overturned in court

A ban on commercial fishing in the Murray River has been overturned by the South AustralianSupreme Court.

The ban was imposed by the minority state government last year.

It was part of a compact with independent MP and parliamentary speaker PETER LEWIS,whose support was crucial to the government gaining power.

But Supreme Court Justice TIM WILLIAMS has ruled in favour of a group of 28 professionalfishermen who challenged the ban.

The judge says there was no basis for the ban other than the compact with Mr LEWIS.

He's ordered that the fishermen be entitled to continue fishing until their licencesare terminated by reasonable notice.
